Ida
Freeman Chess Supporters,
Each year, our
players, parents and teachers are faced with two daunting tasks: 1. Take a group of 8-11 year olds, many of whom are brand new to chess and form a club that is competitive at the national level. 2. Raise $25,000 in order to meet the goals of our club.
A dynamic, active
club such as ours requires resources in order to function properly. Each
year our club needs: equipment, curriculum, uniforms, transportation,
housing, entry fees, scholarship funds, tournament and club management
software, United Chess Federation membership dues etc…
Our club has a
policy of “full inclusion”, meaning that no child will be excluded from
a chess event at Ida Freeman due to lack of funds. Therefore,
chess camps, Chess Academy and Chess Club memberships are free to our
students. Our board also pays the United States Chess Federation
membership fee for any of our players who play competitively.
On average, the
cost of serving one student from the first Chess Camp in August through
the National Championships in May is $1000. Since the parents of our
players are not able to cover these costs coupled with the fact that our
club receives no funds from the school district, we are faced with the
challenge of raising this money ourselves. Throughout the year, our players and their parents hold silent auctions, dinners, “Chess-A-Thons” and other fundraising events. These activities raise approximately 60% of the necessary resources for our activities. The remaining 40% comes from local businesses, corporate sponsors, grants and gifts from private citizens.
